Cochin University: The Pioneer In Science and Technology Studies

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is a government autonomous science and technology university in Cochin, Kerala. The university offers degrees in engineering and science subjects at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. About 2500 students enroll yearly to these programs. The university has three campuses: two in Cochin and one at Pulinkunnu, Kuttanad, Alappuzha.

The university was established in 1971 as University of Cochin and was renamedto Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in 1986. Admissions to all undergraduate and postgraduate courses are based on an All India Entrance Examination known as the Common Admission Test (CUSAT CAT) conducted by the University every year.

Here, we will shed light on how Cochin University had carved a niche in Science and Technology education, not only in Kerala but also in whole India since last three decades. What are different courses available, and what is the admission procedure etc.

There are total 9 faculties are available and under which 27 departments offer graduate and post graduate courses as well as research in different disciplines like engineering, science, technology, humanities, law and management. Apart from these faculties there are about 30 colleges in Kerala that are affiliated with CUSAT. Some research centers are also affiliated with CUSAT.

Courses Available at Faculties of Science, Technology and Engineering of CUSAT
Under the Science faculty following department offer various degree courses- Department of Physics, Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Mathematics, and Department of Statistics.

Courses available are Master of Science (MSc) Programmes, Master of Fisheries Science Programme, Master of Philosophy (M Phil) Programmes, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programmes.

Faculty of Technology has these departments- Department of Marine Engineering, Department of Electronics, Department of Instrumentation, Department of Polymer Science and Rubber Technology, Department of Ship Technology, International School of Photonics, Department of Computer Applications, Department of Computer Science. Courses available are Bachelor of Technology, Master of Technology and Master of Computer Application.

The School of Engineering (SOE) at Thrikkakara, and College of Engineering at Kuttanad, the constituent college of University offer Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology courses in the following engineering branches:Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Information Technology and Safety and Fire Engineering etc.

CUSAT Common Admission Test (CAT)

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) conducts Common Admission Test (CAT) every year for admissions to the graduate level engineering courses (B.Tech / BE), Lateral entry at B.Tech and other courses offered at university. For appearing in CUSAT CAT 2016, candidates have to apply online after meeting all the eligibility criteria levied by Cochin University. Application fee is Rs.1000/- for General Category and Rs.500/- for SC/ST Category.

Candidates must have completed their 10+2 or equivalent from a recognized Board with minimum 50% marks in Aggregate obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for admission in B.Tech/B.E. CUSAT CAT consists of two papers: Paper 1 of Mathematics having 125 questions and Paper 2 comprised of Physics and Chemistry also having total of 125 questions (Physics 75, Chemistry 50 questions). Candidates seeking for admissions to undergraduate engineering courses can check the CUSTA CAT result having the ranks and marks scored by them.

Admission will be done on the basis of online counseling. Candidates have to apply online for CUSAT CAT Counseling as per the guidelines and the last date specified by the University. Seats will be allotted as per the merit in CUSAT CAT and candidate’s preferences.

Why to Study at CUSAT?

Since Cochin University is one of the oldest science and technology universities not only in Kerala but also in India, it has various specialties for which it is to be considered for taking admission in science and technology courses. Some of these specialties are-

• Faculties are best and experienced. And the teaching learning process is really very good.

• Infrastructure is best. Last year CUSAT started a CITTIC division in association with Kerala Startup Mission which works as an incubation center. If you got ideas you can develop them all at best resources from CUSAT.

• B.Tech. in Civil, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics & Communication and Information Technology are the courses accredited by NBA.

• Placements: School of Engineering, Cochin University of Science and Technology has successfully placed 215 out of 376 B.Tech students passed out last year. College of Engineering, Kuttanad, also scored well in placing 80 out of 158 students who passed out, with the Computer Science stream. And Information Technology, Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics and Mechanical engineering were followed closely and witnessed good placement records.
